What do people 65+ think a senior health fair should be? According to Judy Anderson, Doctor of Physical Therapy and founder/director of Physicians Therapy for University Hospital at Northern Illinois University, and current Eastcastle resident says, “It should be led by professional people and companies to educate seniors about their own health with testing, answers to questions and concerns and address a wide selection of health topics.”
So residents and staff at Eastcastle Place joined Judy to create a truly comprehensive and free Senior Health Fair during National Active Aging Week, on Wednesday, September 26 from 1 to 4 p.m. This committee challenged solution providers of senior health issues to join them. They were enthusiastic about demonstrating what is available to seniors to keep the hop in their step and twinkle in their eyes.
Several booths will be scattered through the Eastcastle Place community to help people learn, test and resolve common concerns, including:
Nursing: Eastcastle’s Director of Nursing, Laurie Gatewood will take your blood pressure and discuss safe levels of essential health numbers and answer your general questions.
Assistive Devices: Horizon Healthcare will be showing devices to help people live independently with tools to help pick up items from the floor, put on socks, keep track of medications and a host of other helpful inventions, both big and small, to eliminate frustration.
Vision: Milwaukee Mobile Eye Care will conduct vision tests. Vision Forward will also have a booth to discuss eye problems and show devices now available to assist people with vision problems.
Hearing: Test your hearing and see the state-of-the-art equipment now available to keep the dinner conversation going strong.
Diet: What’s new in food? Our dietician will have exciting new foods to sample that are high in nutrition and rich in flavor.
Exercise & Fitness: The science of exercise will be presented by personal trainers fron Eastcastle Place’s Aquatics and Fitness Center, who will demonstrate the use of gym and pool equipment with activities to keep you moving all day long.
Physical Therapy: The booth for physical therapy will be managed by Director of Rehab Services, Sue Fox. She will test people for balance and potential fall likelihood, then demonstrate options to get stronger and stay off the ground.
Dental: Professionals will discuss gum and teeth care and examine participants to get a jump on any issues that could arise.
Planning: Dr. George Lange, Chairman of Eastcastle’s Health Committee will discuss the crucial topics of Advance Directives nd Do Not Resuscitate orders. He will help guide participants through these difficult decisions.
